We are in the season of eating. Confession: Since starting the Specific Carbohydrate Diet a little over a year ago, I don’t particularly enjoy family get-togethers that revolve around food. Oh wait, every family get together revolves around food! Oy. Do you struggle with this too? I want to go and hang out with friends and family, but the food thing can be tricky.
That being said, it’s good to arm yourself with delicious recipes that are holiday-specific and that maybe even non-SCD eaters will enjoy so you can share your delicious, healthy food with others! For the next few weeks I will help you find recipes for the many holiday get-togethers. There is no reason we cannot partake in food gatherings, we just need to plan in advance.
Today we are starting with one of my FAVORITE side dishes for Thanksgiving, cranberries. Of course my favorite was the canned jelly cranberries that my mom would slice and I could nearly eat the whole can by myself. Today I have some delicious alternatives that have less sugar and are better for your tummy and the tummies of your loved ones! They can thank you later.
Some of these recipes are very similar, but I wanted to include them because we all have different foods we react to and I want you to be able to find the recipe that will work for you.
1. SCD and Paleo Cranberry Sauce by Against All Grain
You know what I love? Cinnamon. This recipe has both cinnamon and nutmeg and a cup of orange juice -my mouth is watering as we speak. Check it out yourself. Danielle always has great recipes!
2. Cranberry Sauce by SCD Lifestyle
This recipe is VERY similar to the one above, but I wanted to include it for those of you looking for a more simple version.
3. Orange-Honey Cranberry Sauce by SCD Recipe
I love the depth of flavor when using zest, in this case orange zest. Now I’m not a huge fan of orange juice, but I do love the smell and flavor of oranges. No picture to show you here. To see the recipe, click on “SCD Recipe” above.
4. Easy Cranberry Sauce by Wellness and Workouts
This recipe has the ‘jellied’ consistency I really like for my cranberry sauce. If oranges are not in your diet, this is the recipe for you. With only three ingredients, you are sure to love how simple it is to get your cranberries for this Thanksgiving! Note: to get the jellied consistency, let it boil a little bit longer. It will get the ‘jellied’ consistency when refrigerated.
5. Easy SCD Apple Cranberry Sauce by SCDgirl
This recipe adds chunks of apples and grape juice. It’s not a traditional combination, but for us SCD’ers grape juice is a great alternative to orange juice. I can’t wait to try it! To see the recipe, click on “SCDgirl” above.
On a personal note: I was really looking forward to eating some cranberries this Thanksgiving, but I added them to my diet last week little by little and they caused a lot of pain and nausea and general yuckiness in the gut for me. I won’t deny it, it was a bit of a blow. Almost everything I’ve been trying to add to my diet lately has been a ‘no’. It makes the whole trying-to-add-more-foods thing not much fun. For now, I will stay with the few things I can eat and try to get my gut back on track.
I hope you get to enjoy your cranberries this holiday season. Eat an extra helping for me!
